Compass Water Solutions® Delivers SPIR-O-LATOR® to an FPSO Off Coast of West Africa

Unit will reduce overboard discharge to less than 5 ppm, minimizing the risk of accidental oily water spills

Tustin, Calif. (November 20, 2025) – Compass Water Solutions® is delivering a SPIR-O-LATOR® for use on a Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) rig off the coast of West Africa. The new unit will first be delivered to Singapore to be mounted on the FPSO prior to it being put into service. The SPIR-O-LATOR® will be used to provide overboard discharge of less than 5 ppm.

SPIR-O-LATOR® technology reduces bilge and slop water oil levels to less than 5 ppm, giving maritime operators “Assurance against a spill™.” The only technology of this caliber on the market, the SPIR-O-LATOR®’s physical barrier breaks down emulsions in oil and reduces the risk of accidental overboard discharge. Oil cannot penetrate the barrier, leaving no opportunity for spills when properly installed and maintained. The product functions as the second stage in a primary system for the removal of emulsified oil.

The FPSO is already equipped with an oily-water separator, but the addition of the SPIR-O-LATOR® will provide overboard discharge of less than 5 ppm when it previously was only less than 15 ppm. This will be the product’s third installation in the field off the coast of Ghana.

“With local environmental rules becoming more stringent, oil discharge management is no longer optional—it’s a mandate. Proactive compliance safeguards both ecosystems and corporate reputation,” said Thomas Farshler, General Manager of Compass Water Solutions®. “Compass®’ SPIR-O-LATOR® technology is built to take on this important challenge.”

Typically used as the second stage within an oily-water separator system, SPIR-O-LATOR® technology does not require chemicals, coalescing filters, clay or carbon filter replacements and it does not produce biological waste byproduct. Minimal operator involvement and an easy installation process saves time and labor costs, and the technology can be adapted for single-skid new builds or modular skids for retrofits.

SPIR-O-LATOR® technology is compliant with MARPOL and local government regulations, which includes treated Slop water discharged into the sea must not exceed 5 parts per million (ppm) of oil; the discharge must be processed through approved oil filtering equipment (oily-water separator); discharge is only permitted while the ship is underway; and the filtering equipment must be fitted with an oil content meter and an automatic stopping device that activates if the oil content exceeds 5 ppm.

The retrofit was a flexible, creative solution for a customer looking to lessen its footprint to preserve valuable floor space on the vessel while minimizing installation time and disruption to daily water needs. The newly installed system is more compact than its predecessor and is easier to maintain and service from an operator standpoint, as it offers easy access to vertically mounted high-pressure pumps and ready access to all instruments and filters. With straightforward service and maintenance, the unit can be easily cared for and repaired as needed, leading to a long and reliable operating life.

The Aqua-SEP® Series III™ Reverse Osmosis Fresh Water Maker is a closed-loop control system built with NEMA 4X integrity and can be operated in fully automatic or manual modes from the same standard controller. Standard systems range from 25 m3d to 100 m3d and handle a wide range of salinity, with temperature ranges from 0°C / 32°F to 35°C / 95°F. All unit options are pre-engineered and are available in both standard skids and modular configurations.
